ABOUT ME

DSC02751.JPG

I have been in clinical practice for over 20 years and I have extensive experience working with adult clients from diverse backgrounds in individual and couples therapy.

I moved to Winston-Salem in 2013 to work as a clinical psychologist with Wake Forest University before deciding to expand my practice. My professional experience includes providing psychotherapy, consultation, supervision, teaching, and outreach services in a variety of settings such as hospitals, community mental health, and both public and private universities.

I spent a significant part of my childhood in South America, specifically Argentina and Brazil, and I have also lived in France and Japan. I have foreign language fluency in Spanish and Portuguese, and I thoroughly enjoy every opportunity I encounter to conduct therapy in either of my foreign languages.

I attended San Diego State University for my undergraduate studies and moved to the Midwest for graduate school. I completed an APA (American Psychological Association) approved doctoral degree in clinical psychology at Wright State University and an APA approved  doctoral internship with Purdue University.

I hold active state licenses to practice as a psychologist in Colorado and in

North Carolina. I also hold an interjudicial license through the Association of

State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB). The ASPPB oversees the

Psychology Interjudicial Compact (PsyPact), an interstate compact designed

to facilitate the practice of telepsychology across state boundaries. Thus, I

am licensed to provide psychotherapy via telehealth to individuals visiting

or residing in any of the PsyPact participating states (currently 39).

ABOUT

MY APPROACH

My therapeutic framework is rooted in the biopsychosocial model and I often integrate multicultural and relational theories to understand the world views of my clients, and to incorporate these views into our work. In helping my clients achieve their goals, I employ many evidence-based therapeutic interventions such as Interpersonal Process, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Mindfulness Based Therapy. I am also trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), Trauma-Informed Yoga, Expressive Arts Therapy, and The Gottman Method for working with couples.

Should you choose to work with me, you will quickly find that I place the utmost importance in building a therapeutic relationship that is based on mutual trust, respect, and regard. It is my belief that a positive therapeutic alliance is the mechanism of change, healing, and growth.

SERVICES & SPECIALTIES

MY SERVICES & SPECIALTIES

Individual Therapy

I offer individual psychotherapy for adults age 18 and older. I am a generalist with vast clinical experience in mood and anxiety disorders, ADHD, lifespan development and transitions, interpersonal difficulties, intimate relationship issues, immigration and acculturation, military service and families, intimate partner violence, and trauma to name a few.

Couples Therapy

Working with couples to improve their dynamic and relationship bond is a passion of mine. In addition to specialized education, training and experience in helping couples, I have completed extensive training with the Gottman Institute in the research-based and highly effective Gottman Method for couples therapy.  In line with my personal values and the APA Code of Ethics, I welcome couples of all backgrounds and at all stages in their relationship.

Multicultural/Multilingual Psychotherapy

Through my lived experiences I have learned that one cannot separate language from culture. Culture dictates the way of life of a given group of people, their shared values, customs, beliefs and practices. Much like a stage, culture provides the setting and context for our experiences. In turn, language enables individuals to express their thoughts and feelings, and to derive meaning through the use of symbols and sounds. Language is therefore the verbal and non-verbal expression of culture. Because culture and language jointly influence how one experiences and expresses emotions, I believe emotional content is often best processed in one’s primary language. To this end, I am able to provide psychotherapy to Spanish, Portuguese and English speaking clients.

EMDR

Rooted in the Adaptive Information Processing model, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is an evidence-based approach that enables individuals to heal from the emotional distress  that often follows disturbing life experiences. I have completed an EMDRIA-approved training in EMDR with Roy Kiessling, LISW, a former senior trainer for Francine Shapiro’s EMDR Institute and the founder of EMDR Consulting.

Trauma-Informed Yoga

Trauma is the emotional and somatic response to one or more harmful or life-threatening events. Trauma rewires the nervous system and consequently has lasting adverse effects on one's mental and physical well-being. As a therapeutic approach, trauma-informed yoga is a grounding practice aimed at promoting increased body awareness and addressing the nervous system dysregulation that is inherent in trauma.

Energy Healing & Reiki Practitioner

Energy is a vital, living, flowing force, and the same is instrumental in sustaining health and wellbeing. Environmental toxins, contaminated foods, emotional trauma, and negative belief patterns all have the potential to interfere with a person’s energy flow. With ever-increasing scientific evidence that human beings are comprised of an energy system (biofield), the healthcare community has been increasingly incorporating various modalities of energy healing, such as Reiki, to enhance positive client outcomes. (NCCIH 2021)

Reiki is a practice that evolved from ancient Tibetan Buddhist healing practices. In Japanese, the words “Rei” and “Ki” mean universal life energy. Reiki is one of the most widely known forms of healing and involves the moving of energy to restore harmony to the biofield, increase the client’s energy to heal, and balance the body’s physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual energies.

Outreach, Trainings & Workshops

Throughout my career I have sought various opportunities to share what I know and to educate others, inside and outside of university classroom settings. I am a strong proponent of the public health model, and a firm believer of prevention-based mental health approaches. I welcome speaking engagements to community-based organizations, as well as collaborating with other professionals and organizations, to develop community trainings and workshops. To discuss a speaking engagement or request a workshop, please message me below.

Insurance and Rates

INSURANCE & RATES

INSURANCE

RATES

I am a contracted provider for behavioral health plans with BCBS of NC, CBHA, and UHC for individual psychotherapy.

If you are interested in exploring your behavioral health benefits, please call your insurance company directly and ask them about your in-network or out-of-network coverage, and the reimbursement rates for psychotherapy with a clinical psychologist.

My 2023 fees are $175 for standard 60-minute intake sessions and $150 for standard 60-minute sessions.

I accept credit/HSA/FSA cards. Clients are required to keep a card on file in my online, secure system. Telehealth sessions must be paid via a card on file. The full rate for each session is due when services are rendered.

Important questions to ask your insurance:

  • Is my provider in-network for my specific health insurance plan?

  • Does my insurance plan have behavioral health benefits and is psychotherapy covered?

  • Is there a limit to the number of sessions my health insurance will pay per year?

  • What is my copay/out-of-pocket cost per session?

  • What is my health insurance deductible and has it been met?

*Please note that some insurance companies may reimburse a portion of the fee paid. I can provide itemized receipts for clients to submit to their insurance companies for reimbursement. I can also provide you with a more detailed Good Faith Estimate of your session rates once we have formulated a treatment plan.

Cancellation Policy

Because your time is reserved exclusively for you, I require a minimum of 24 hours advance notice to cancel or reschedule your appointment. Missed appointments without advance notice will be charged the full fee. Exceptions to this policy exist (i.e. emergencies, illness) and are at the practice's discretion. Please note that health insurance benefits do not pay for missed appointment fees.

Telehealth

TELEHEALTH

With nearly 20 years of providing traditional in-person psychotherapy prior to the pandemic, transitioning to telehealth in the spring of 2020 was certainly an adjustment for me as a therapist. Yet, the adjustment period was brief and within a few weeks teletherapy sessions with my clients had the same flow and depth they had before. In fact, research is emerging that shows telehealth to be as effective as in-person sessions.

At present, the vast majority of my clients continue to prefer teletherapy and identify convenience, accessibility, scheduling flexibility, less time and resources spent driving to and from an office location, ability to fit a therapy session during lunch or other convenient time-frame, among other reasons for their stated preference.

REQUEST AN APPOINTMENT

DSC02767.JPG

Please note that my schedule is currently full. If you have been referred to me by another professional and would like to inquire about being added to my waitlist, please fill out this form. I aim to return all weekday messages within 48 hours. Messages left on Friday afternoons, weekends, or holidays will be returned the following week.

How do I schedule an appointment?

What should I expect from our first appointment?

Your initial appointment with me will be for an intake session. During the intake session, my role is to listen to you, gather information about your current concerns and your history, and help you define your goals for treatment. As part of your intake session, I will also assess for therapeutic fit according to your goals and therapeutic needs. If I determine that your therapeutic needs would be best served by a different professional, I will provide you with appropriate alternative referrals.

What forms do I need for my initial session?

Prior to your intake, you will receive an invitation via Hushmail (encrypted email) to create an account with my practice’s telehealth portal. All required forms will be available and should be completed via the online Client Portal. If you are engaging in couples therapy, each person attending therapy must create an account and individually complete the required forms.

Will our sessions be confidential?

My practice adheres to the highest standards of confidentiality and the protection of your personal information (PHI). I utilize a HIPAA compliant online platform for telehealth visits, as well as phone and email services.

What if I am experiencing an immediate crisis?

If you are experiencing a mental health emergency, please call 911, go to the nearest emergency room, or call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.
